First female astronaut. Sally Ride was the first American female to go to space. Note the verbiage in all references to Sally Ride. Patricia Cowing is acknowledged and celebrated by NASA as the first female astronaut. Brilliant woman who got a PhD when she was still in her twenties and was responsible for training astronauts on how to cope in zero gravity environments. Way ahead of her time.
