I have a property line hedge that is about 6 feet tall; withing local ordinances. However, they are getting bushy and I want to make sure I don't encroach on my neighbors property (she is a mean neighbor). I am allowed to go into her yard to trim the hedges?

Assume I have already asked her and she says NO. I am telling you, she is crazy about her property line. Believe me, I have tried to me extra nice and civil about this.

What you need to do is send her a letter and let her know that you have noticed your shrub has been encroaching upon her property. Send it cerified mail return receipt (she may be annoyed at that, but you need to do it that way for your records).

Tell her you would be more than happy to arrange a day and time convenient for you both when you might be able to come over and trim it (and take away the trimmings.) Let her know you need to hear from her within the next two weeks and how to reach you.

If she doesn't want you to take care of it, that's fine. And if you don't hear from her, you will assume she would rather take care of the shrub over her property herself.

That way if she gets back with you you can take care of it, if she doesn't - she has no grounds to gripe. Then all you have to take care of is your side and the top.

Good Luck!

Even if she is mean and nasty, it's best to be diplomatic and make it seem like it was her idea. You could call her up or drop by and tell her you are planning to trim your hedge....... but you wonder if she would like to have you trim the hedge from her side too. If you can't access it without going onto her property, then you can't comply. So make it sound like you would be doing her a favor (which you are trying to do) that would save her some work. Give her two or three days when you might be available to do it, and let her pick, if you can.
I sympathize. I have a nasty neighbor on the back line, who complained to the Township about our fence (we got a variance! Haha!) so we planted lots of bamboo to screen him out. He's unhappy about not being able to snoop, but so what.

No!! However I suggest would you contact her saying "I have noticed my scrubs are encroaching on your property. Would you like me to come over and trim them?" I'm sorry you have to live next to a mean neighbor. Been there done that!!!! Remember they are very happy when in control. put the ball in her court. You can't go wrong. Good luck and be careful.

Unless your neighbor permits it. You do not have the right to trespass your neighbors property. You may own the hedge but your neighbor owns the land!

You will have to find a way trim the hedge from your side.

Go for it and see what happens. If she gets mad at you, simply ask her if she would rather trim the hedge herself and then laugh when she doesn't know what to say.

Not without her permission. You can trim all you want to on your side of the line, and she can trim all she wants to on her side of the line. Otherwise permission must be granted, or you could be charged with trespassing.

I have the same situation. I ask first. If she says no, let her side go, trim the tops from your side. They make a power pole pruner for that.

What hangs over the property line is theirs. You should ask her permission if you are concerned about how she will react.

I belive that if they are "entering" your property or affecting it you could cut it from your side. But to be sure you should ask her politely if she is mean and if she doesn't budge take it up with the court.
