Is it true that a cable modem jack must be connected in the cable line where it first enters the house? That is, must it be placed in the cable line before the jack for any TV or other equipment?

Every splitter connected to the cable line increases the signal level. The greater number of directions it splits in, the greater the increase. This increase is not necessarily a good thing. Most cable modems will only work within a certain range in these levels, so too great of an increase could drop the modem offline.

The more splitters it has to travel through, the more wires it also has to travel through as well. Each wire has the potential to add more interference and throw these levels off balance, as well as increase the SNR (signal to noise ratio) on the line. Essentially, it can create “static” on the line that a modem doesn’t handle very well.

It’s best to connect it to a jack with a direct connection to the cable box on the outside.
