You will find the usual answers elsewhere. But I grew up in Dublin which imported a huge amount of slang from England before we threw the Brits out.

A tosser was used to describe a good-for-nothing. Probably spent all day tossing back drink. "Tosspot" is from the 1800's.

But a 'tosser' was also an old penny. [Two pennies were commonly used in 'pitch'n'toss'. Refereees throughout the British Isles, which include Ireland of course toss a penny to decide sides in all types of football ].

We used term "couldn't give a tosser' the same way as 'couldn't care less' because you could not get much for a penny in the 50's.

The wanking connotation is the third noble option. It's been around at least 100 years.

A tosser is a British, Irish and Australian slang term for a disliked or incompetent person generally synonymous with wanker.

The literal meaning of the word tosser once meant a heavy drinker and would be similar in use to "tosspot". Today, however, the word has been taken up by younger people to describe a stupid person as a wanker — a tosser — i.e someone who masturbates.

well tosser sounds like a slang to me originated probably in the US but the proper word for it "toss" comes from: Middle English tossen, possibly of Scandinavian origin
