It could be two things. In naming conventions, ending a name with the "a" sound either makes it effeminate (like Shawn is a guy but Shawna is a girl), or in North African and Middle Eastern countries, is like "of the". Shalan is an evergreen berry bush in the northwestern part of the US. This bush has dark purple berries, and interestingly enough, when Louis and Clark went on their expedition to the west coast, the Indians thought that Clark's black boatman had been rubbed with the dark berries of this bush (also knows as Gaultheria or the Salal bush), as they had never seen anyone from Africa before. In both African and Asian cultures, the evergreen is admired for its endurance (it maintains its color year round). I think your name either means "of the Salal bush" or "Salal bush girl" and speaks of the blessing of perserverance and endurance.

I'm a Palestinian, and I used to be born whilst the Palestinian revolution used to be in complete influence. So my mum and dad named me Thaer, which means that insurgent. I like my title, however as God blessed me with getting towards Islam I now suppose it is excellent that I difference my title to an Islamic title. I intend on replacing my title to Mustapha after one of the crucial Prophet Muhammad P.B.U.H names, I adore it greater than my present title besides. PEACE!!!!

It is too rare to appear in the baby name book. It is related to Shana, and Lana, and Leilani, etc. In old German: precious. In Gaelic/irish: little rock, in Greek: Light, in Hawaiian: afloat, calm as still waters...it is also related to Shana, to Helen...it is a pretty name. Very original. It also sounds vaguely Yoruban. Nice name.
