Nitrogen is an atom with 7 protons and 7 electrons. Normally when someone refers to a substance they mean the form that is normally found in nature, and nitrogen is normally found as a diatomic molecule and actually the majority of our atmosphere is diatomic nitrogen. It is chemically inert in normal conditions.
