Promotion without pay. Although he could be testing him...as getting a shot to apprentice under a Master electrician is hard to come by around my neck of the woods. I'd tell him to stick it out..it could be the proving ground phase.

I was once an apprentice and you do get some strange little tests thrown in to test your willingness to take on responsibility and dedication and of course his initiative he could look on this as a bit of a test just to see how he gets on. Part of my education involved the day to day running of a small engine repair shop but as it was only a two man business I was told this when I was taken on but speaking on the phone to customers and selling spare parts was not a problem cos my boss was a good bloke even as far as lending me the money to repair the front end on my motor cycle when I hit a wall just a straight loan which we agreed I would repay weekly at a rate I could easily afford he even let me do the repair in the shop during working hours had I got snotty about having to do other work around the shop I don,t think he would have been so helpfull

It's a promotion. Even though no pay increase, it's resume building material and will give him/her experience to carry them forward.
