I'm a virgin but why is sex such a big thing when apparently it is nothing special and it hurts?

Sex is not supposed to be painful. Generally you would find it painful and nothing special (ie not very pleasurable) if you are not really ready to have sex, ie are not fully aroused. This will certainly be the case if you are too young to have sex. Many people nowadays start having sex when they are far too young to enjoy it properly because their bodies have not developed enough. After you reach puberty (ie get your periods) your body still has to go on developing for a number of years before it reaches full maturity. You are very wise to leave having sex until then. Don't let yourself be pressured into having it too early and ruining your first experience which should be a thing of wonder.

You will know when the time is right because your body will have urges that cannot be denied. A safe guide is to hold off having sex as long as you possibly can. Once you are really grown enough it will not hurt (except perhaps just a tiny bit on the first penetration, but probably not even then) and it will be something special all right.

Don't even consider it if you are under 16. Those laws are for your protection. You may feel that you are as mature as you will ever be, but we all feel like that at every age, even 3 or 4. Later on you will realise that you weren't.
