you are still a couple years away probably. Some girls get their periods at 12 but it is uncommon. 13 & 14 i think is more common.
If you get your first period at school, the nurse will have pads for you, but if you want, buy your own box ahead of time. Trust me you probably have a couple years to go. And dont be eager honey, once it gets here you will wish it never had.

Oh, I remember when that was me. By the way, I can't give you an exact time on that because every girl is different. You should be getting in the next 2 or 3 yrs. though and yes you want to prepare. Just tell your mom the straight up truth and she shouldn't do anything but help you. Consider this, your lucky because when I first got it I was living with my dad and my stepmom and I didn't know what to do because I got it over night and didn't know how to explain it. A little bit later that morning, I found out it was a lot easier to tell then to deal with it on my own. Best of luck and after your second or third period you should be able to get an estimate of around where in the months your cycle will be. By the way, also if you didn't know it will happen every month at around the same time(like if you had a previous one at around the 20th then you'll most likely start in the next month around the 20th) Also, your first one is usually different than all the others. Again, best of luck on that.

If you don't feel your mom is approachable with this certain subject, give her little hints. Talk to her about a friend of yours that got her period, and see what she says. I've seen quite a few of your questions on here regarding periods, and I just wanted to say - CALM DOWN! It's nothing that you want.(Just yet.) Trust me. Periods can come with multiple complications. Endometriosis, cramps, vomiting, fever, migraines, bad attitudes...and lots of money! I have fallen victim to every single one of these things. And, I started mine 2 days after my 9th birthday, a little over 11 yrs ago.
If you have discharge, I would suggest you go to the doctor. It could just mean that you'll start your period soon, but it could also mean that you have a yeast infection. Those things can lead to you not being able to have babies when you get older if left untreated. It could also be quite simply your own body's natural juices that it used to clean your private part. It is important that you go and see your doctor.
I hope this helped you. Good luck with everything - and try to relax a bit!

If you can bring up the subject with your mom, ask her around what age she got her first period. That's usually the best indicator. I had a discharge for quite a while before my period showed up so that's not always a sign that it's going to start soon. If you're still uncomfortable about bringing up the subject, check your mom's bathroom for any pads or liners and keep a couple on you. That way you're never unprepared! :)

Im 9 and my mom keeps telling me I might have gotten it but I was too scared to tell her when I found out so I went to Borders bookstore and I found this book called the care and keeping of you I read it and then I felt so secure talking to my mom and now she knows anything and everything about me. It also tells you things like how to deal with strong fellings and puberty, Tampons and pads and all that type of thing. It helped me and I bet it will help you. And if it happens at school tell a teacher you trust she'll probably have something with her or if you're embarrased roll up some toilet paper and put it in your underwear and then go to the office or use your cell to call your mom and ask her to come and pick you up or something.

If you are finding it hard to ask your mum write her a letter and leave in somewhere she will find it ( you can do this before you leave for school in the morning). She will most likley go and get them for you when you are at school. And yes you should be prepared I did not get mine until I was 14 and I was shopping it is something that you don't want to say when it happens but it will happen to all of us. Also if your mum has not told you yet maby let her know whats going on maby she did not get hers at this age a thought that she would have more time to talk to you. Hope that I was able to help you.

Just tell her that u have a discharge and that you need a pad for just in case you get your period. It does sound like your period is comming soon. I got mine when I was 11 and when I got it, I was VERY confused because my mom or anyone told me what it was.
