Not that I know of...
I think they were introduced in Jedi because Lucas figured they would be great for merchandising, and that children would just eat em up. Some mentioned the same about Jar Jar and Darth Maul.

The primitive warrior tribe at the end of this film was originally supposed to be a tribe of Wookiees. In pre-production, though, the decision was made to go to short creatures with short fur rather than very tall creatures with longer fur and, hence, the Ewoks were created (Ewok may very well have been created by rearranging the sounds in the word "Wookiee").

Warwick Davis, who played Wicket (the little Ewok that found Princess Leah), says that he based his Ewok character on the personality of his dog.

I thought they always kinda looked a tad like bears, like teddy bears really but yeah i guess teddy bears are inspired from real bears so lol yes bears. :D

I know that they look EXACTLY like a Brussels Griffon(a type of purebred dog).
