The UN and the world community, especially the rich nations of the US and UK, refused to stop the genocide in Rwanda, and now there is a chance for the world to save hundreds of thousands of lives in Sudan, but will we take action? Is the UN being rendered useless by the nations more interested in oil than lives? There is only one question here though; will the 21st century be one of
humanity or inhumanity?

The UN does not have the backing or support of their core power members to take enforcement actions.

But the humanitarian services of the UN are critical to relieving the suffering of people in war torn areas and to provide refugee assistance, in coordinating with other chairities.

So NO they are not useless, just toothless.

Who has replaced the UN to make them redundant? They may be ineffective, but redundant they are not. Where are the rest of the countries in the world that make up the UN? Why is it that only the UK and US get the hit for not doing anything. I won't apologize for all the work, aid, and donations that either country provide to the world. Look to yourself and see what you are doing to help the situation?

The UN is crippled in Darfur (except for various specialized agencies which are providing aid) because the Security Council can't act with a Chinese veto and the Chinese love Sudan, or rather Sudanese oil.

any intervention in Darfur (or any other country in Africa) will have the (self appointed) "black leaders" in full cry about "neocolonialism" and similar balderash.
Face it. People like Mugabe like to kill. And they have enough cash and enough "friends" to make sure no one interferes. To them, the idea of someone preventing them from murdering who they want is an anathema. And any excuse will do to stop any such intervention.
Sad. Cold blooded. but very "Politically Correct"
