ok dean, i dont own a 4x4, but im raised in az living with it so keep that in mind if you find out im wrong
1st check make sure its actually shifting, as it might be your shifter? or is automatic check the wire connections, resolder if needed...
2nd check another time, and if you can feel or hear it changing gears AT ALL then its your tranny
3rd this is what i don't know, vacuum?
i work at sand limo. sandbuggies fabricator, and we dont worry or I dont worry about that job?
as in saying why would it be a vacuum leak? or pump?
4th check fuses make sure its lit up if ur auto shift, doubt you are.
5th
i strongly agree that you didn't put either a sensor or a wire connector on the tranny. it could be stopping it
for instance. say you didnt hook up A SENSOR for the 4-wheel hi to make sure that gear doesn't over heat, check all the sensors, all the connections, becuase i highly doubt a vacuum pump or a used engine will damage your tranny.
i think its something electrical
its a nightmare dude.

Are you sure the front wheels are actually being driven when youre in 4Lo? Your shifter must be ok because it is shifting the transfer case into low range, but the front axle might not be engaged. That used motor you have might not be working.

Most 4x4 run on 4low. 4hi is for more serious conditions. If you drive on rough terrain I would reccomend that you fix it. Get a good mechanic.
