After heavy snow The top half of my roof is exposed to the sun, while the lower half stays in the shade all day..
snow on top melts from the sun, melting snow causes lower half (not receiving heat of sun) to freeze up. How do I eliminate this problem? Thanks

you can get heaters to run along your gutters that will help to melt the ice and prevent it from building up so much. similar to the type of product that is commonly used to wrap around pipes to keep them from freezing..

This was my specialty. I lived in New England and Alaska for most of my life. This has nothing to do with the sun, trust me. This is a two part problem; there is warm air leaking into your attic at one or more places. Also, your attic is not ventilated properly. You want your attic to be as cold as possible. Pull back existing insulation and spray foam around electrical boxes, wire chases, anything that protrudes into the attic. Your physical access to the attic may be your worst offender. Button it up! Next, make sure your vents are clear of obstructions (insulation, etc.) Contact a contractor if there is not enough ventilation (you want it to be like outside). Make sure you have AT LEAST R-38 in your attic. Ice dams can't happen without heat; the sun has little energy in January, it just seems that way. Remember, heat rises so logicly the top half of your roof would melt first.

There are electric powered cords observed as "warmth tapes" which you would be able to weave up and down alongside the decrease area of your roof(2-3') above the fascia on roof deck to consistantly warmth and soften any ice dams that enhance

You can get snow rakes from most hardware stores- this will help you remove the snow from your roof so it doesn't happen at all. There are also coils that you can buy for your roof that heat up to help melt snow.
