Someone got air in your lines it the most likely scenairo, this can occur if you just had your brakes done and they didn't bleed them properly. (I'm assuming this has been happening since you got the brakes done)
However you could have a bad master cylinder
Leaking brake lines
Leaking Caliper
Leaking slave cylinder
Unfortunately the most typical reason is also one of the more expensive which is a bad master cylinder or a bad front caliper.
If it has been doing this since your brakes were changed then when they did your brake job they got air trapped in the brake line, and all you have to do is bleed the brakes. (or have them do it properly) However if it's just recently started, then unfortunatly, it's most likely the master cylinder or caliper is leaking.
Look for fluid around your tires or by your brake pedal (inside the car) If you see fluid, that's where you have your leak. However it is a small leak, you may NOT see fluid until you take the thing apart and have it inspected, so please take it to a brake shop and have it inspected before you get into an accident.

Good chance you let the brake fluid level get too low and it sucked some air into the lines. Any reputable local mechanic can take care of that for you in just a few minutes and for very little money. I'd say about $25 or less. Stay away from places like Meineke, they are notorious for overcharging you and doing unnecessary work. I have taken a few vehicles to meineke and was told I needed new rotors and wheel cylinders and whatever else they could think of for hundreds of dollars. I took the vehicles elsewhere, including dealers and got the work done for a fraction of that cost on they did not need all the parts meineke claimed they did.

Well there could be a couple of things going on.
1. you may need to replace the rear brakes
2. you may need to bleed the system
I would start by checking the rear brakes if they look good then bleed the system.
bleeding the system is not complicated. there are two ways to do this.
1. you can by a bleeder kit at any good auto parts store. you will want two follow the directions as each bleeder kit is different.
2. you can get a friend to help you. I have my wife help me. this is the way I prefer to do it it seems to bleed better.
to start you will want to check you fluid level make sure it is full. then have one person pump the break peddle 3-4times and hold the peddle down on the last pump. them loosen the bleeder valve at the wheel there should be fluid squirt.the peddle will move. tighten the bleeder valve and repeat this process 3-4 times.if no fluid then continue until you get fluid. do this for each wheel. REMEMBER to check fluid OFTEN so you don't run it out.refill if necessary

the only way you would have to add brake fluid is if you have a leak-brake fluid doesnt get low like oil or antifreeze-if theres no leaks you wont have to put brake fluid in-id say you blew a line out-probably a rear line(these are the first ones to go 90% of the time-if ya had brakes and then all of a sudden didnt you just blew a line out-just fill up the brake fluid and look underneath the car while a friend pumps the brake pedal-you will be able to see your brake fluid dripping or shooting out where your line rotted out or broke-hope this helps

If the pedal goes straight to the floor then it's probly a blown line and checking the fluid level will confirm that.
If the pedal holds firm when you pump it up and hold it then it's probly your brake booster. (The round thing attached to your firewall and your master cyclinder is attached to that).
In a rare instance I've seen this issue happen because the calipers were installed upside down.
