at the start he counts out: "unos, dos, tres, catorce" meaning "1,2,3,13". What does this mean? I know U2 is Catholic, so I suspect it is a reference to a quote in the new testament:: 3rd book, 13th verse?

Is this right? I have no idea what that verse is, but I guess the christians put great stock in it. I can't think of any other meaning for those numbers, but if you can, tell me. Gracias.

I believe it is a count of the number of albums. Bono has made jokes about it in interviews, being drunk, incorrect Spanish, and offered up other reasonable explainations here and there, but he usually goes back to it being the album count. I have never heard mention of it being a passage from the New Testament.

Bruce Springsteen explained it as "the correct math" for a rock and roll band. He went on to say that the sum of a great band must add up to be greater then its number of members.

Personally, I like Bruce's explaination the best.

At the beginning of the song, U2 lead singer Bono counts off in Spanish unos, dos, tres, catorce!. In the version on the live album U2.Communication, Bono falsely announces the language as Gaelic. In English, this translates to "one, two, three, fourteen!" (Proper translation of "one, two, three, four" would be "uno, dos, tres, cuatro.") When asked about this oddity in an interview for Rolling Stone, Bono replied "there may have been alcohol involved." A Spanish reply of "¡Hola!" is also heard behind the "Hello, hello" of the refrain, as well as "¿Dónde está?" after the line "I'm at a place called Vertigo," meaning "Where is [this place]?" or "¿Como estás?" which means 'How are you?'.

I am not sure of the meaning but Bruce Springsteen used that very song as the opening when he did his induction speech for U2 at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony...I do not remember his explaining either...LOL
