If I have a short story or book?

What is a good place or source to submit the work? I have looked into this before but wasn't as serious. Any experiences or ideas out there?

There are many publishers out there, but many are not to be trusted. If you are truely serious, you'll need to get a literary agent.

Try a short story magazine or one sponsered by your school. They are always looking for new writers.

Try getting to a English teacher and he/she can get it to some different people. I have done it! Mine got to the state newspaper that way.
