Rather than get the bottom of the barrel option wise. Go with the BMW made MINI Cooper S. You would be able to get a few more options as well as have a car that takes the curves like a dream. It is the most fun I have ever had driving a car. But if you must go with a standard BMW or Merc. I would take the BMW, they tend to be more fun to drive.

The lowest model of Merc (the A Class) is small and the Diesel model will do in excess of 55mpg. Better than most cars on the road today.
The 1 Series BMW Diesel will do more than 50mpg.
These bottom of the range cars - WHAT THE QUESTION IS ABOUT - are preferable (from an environmental point of view) than most other cars on the road - Go Preach elsewhere

Its down to the amount you wish to spend. Older Merc's are better built then BMW's but like wise Newer BMW's are better than Merc's.

In the US, the lowest merc is lower than the lowest bmw. Cheaper, less power.

BMW. Build quality of Mercs is questionable, considering the price.

The BMW is much faster than the merc, the merc is confortable.It depends on what you want or what you need.But still the beemer is a lot better.

I'd always prefer a Merc to a BM cause BM's are too common now, but lowest model means the A class which is rubbish beyond the likes of the Russian communist machines like Trebant, Moskivich and Lada!! So on that basis I'd take a not-much-better 1 series BMW.

According to my Experience
I had BMW 2004, 320, and I had Benz C200 Compressor 2004.
For Luxury,interior looks, safety,better Control I go for the mercedes.
For External look,speed, I go for BMW, but from inside it's so poor.

I like the lower BMW models more than the Mercedes. The low Mercedes models look like a Camry.
