My Wife and I own a small home family buisness that operates on a contract by contract basis. My "legal" position in the company is Vice President and I operate very much so at that position however most of my work could be classified as Project Manager being that I work in the field with my technicians. Is this a mistake to list "Vice President" as my job title considering I have never stepped foot in a university. Would you say this confuses the reader. I just wish to convey the level of responsibilty I can handle to the reader.

Very good point you made "speak up" and I assume you hold that type of position which is important for me to know considering that you would be a deciding factor in the hiring process. Unlike giant corps I have time to be with my men in the field as well as filling the responsibilities of a VP. So I guess I do give you credit as you manage a much lager scale than I do...but I am still a VP by definition.

If you were to use that title, and not describe the size of your business or scope of your responsibility, then you would confuse the reader and potentially mis-represent yourself.

However, if you do those things, anyone who reads your resume will understand your role and it is completely acceptable.

It sounds to Me like you feel unsure about your position. Although it really doesn't matter if you have attended a University as long as you are not conveying that you have. Your Resume may read something like this: As the Vice-President of SOME COMPANY I was held personally responsible for quality management and outstanding production of our field technicians and services provided by SOME COMPANY.

You could describe your self as: "Vice President, Project Management" or "Vice President, Project Management Office"

The supporting details of your job description should be sufficient to impress upon the reader what your experience and qualifications are.

Consider this, many people in financial institutions (especially the Marketing Dept) have "Assoc. Vice President" titles and barely any real world professional experience.

Good luck!

It does not seem like a mistake to me . . .

It sounds like as a family business owner, you have a level of administrative responsibilities that are above a typical Project Manager, and I think it would be fine to list Vice President on the resume.

No it is not a mistake, If you and your wife own the company, it would make perfect since that one of you would be the president and the other the vice president. You do not have to have a college degree to earn or have that title.

Just because you have never been to college doesnt mean that you cant be the vice president of a company. Especially if that was your title. So yes, put that on your resume. It will be an asset to it. Employers love knowing that people can be high achievers on their own merrit. Congrats

I think that yes, it would. Better to list "vice president of such-and-such" somewhere in the text than as a job title, or if listed as a job title put it in parentheses.

People may be threatened if they see the words "vice president" on your resume. You don't want to leave it out entirely but you don't want to completely eradicate it either. I hope this was helpful! :)

You don't have to set foot in a university to qualify for VP of a company. Go ahead and list it, you deserve to.
