but i'm scared to lose him as a friend. I've been hinting around of how I feel, but scared to commit my feelings to him all the way in fear of losing him. Should I bite the bullet and tell him, or charish him as a friend only?

go ahead tell him.. friends are supposed to tell everything right. even if he doesn't feel the same he will be your friend.. and maybe he does feel the same way.. so go ahead

I think that life is to short to live in "What ifs" and "I don't knows" and "Maybes"... You should tell him how you feel and if it makes you guys stop being friends then you weren't friends in the first place!!!! It is better to know so if He doesn't feel the same way you can move on to better things!!

The feelings might pass. Just give it time. Once you give in to temptation, you can never go back and it will never be the same. If you are willing to do it, then go for it
