When trees are damaged they often die. When trees die you can have deforestation begin. When deforestation begins and trees are being lost to damage by giraffes (or other methods) desertification can set in. The loss of trees in the Rain Forest regions of the world causes loss of temperature contol, loss of a canopy of plants that live amongst the tall trees of the Rain Forests of the world including Africa. Such that much wildlife, plant diversity and possible medical applications of such plant life are lost. Also the loss of trees causes the loss of temperature control created by the absorbtion or deflection of sunlight from the leaves of the trees. Along with Rain Forests hold a great deal of water that comes into the region when it has torrential rains such that floods and land washing away (top soil etc.) can transpire often causing serious tragedies to any existing life forms and places, such as human villages and other plants or animals. (E.g. what transpired recently in Guatamal where Rain Forests were cut down) Both elephants and giraffes have an effect upon plant life especially trees but not anywhere near as rapid or as much as humans with chain saws, and burning down purposely Rain Forests to convert the poorly producing land into farm land.
Then there is also the effect to be considered about waste gases produced from their excrement, diseases they may carry and transmit, along with the carbon dioxide they breath out.
But humans are much more destructive to forests than many animals are because they tend to be kept in check in normal situations by predators to some lesser or greater extent.
Now this place says that giraffes actually help the ecology of the environment they are from. I think that elephants do more damage as they knock down trees to get to the leaves etc.

But then what was there before Giraffes came along? Rainforest probably?
The loss of trees results in soil erossion and desertification.

They can strip a tree of leaves and bark - killing the tree. That's why at zoos you see the trees with fencing around them - to protect the tree.
