You must have an anti-virus solution. Windows has a free option, but would you hire the FOX that guards the chicken coup? I prefer the plain version of Norton Anti-virus.
You should have an anti-spyware solution on your computer. I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.

You can survive for like maybe 2 weeks without McAfee or norton and thats it ur pc is out the window.
Get McAfee i say best deals i have got and really quick on the viruses (Virus scan most important followed by Firewall)
Even though XP has a firewall its not the best but does block out a small amount which can annoy i guess. !

Windows XP does not contain any virus protection. Use a third party software suite such as McAfee or Symantec to accomplish this. To manage spyware go to www.microsoft.com/defender and download the free software called Defender that will protect you against spyware. In addition to the virus checker - make sure that you set auto-update on so that you get new patches as they become available. You can get e-trust virus checker for Windows XP free for a year - search on Microsoft.com for this.

you should get spyware programs too. There are a couple of free ones off of the internet that I use all of the time. Spybot search and destroy, Ad-aware SE Personal (lavasoft), and Windows defender which is the new program from Microsoft (Beta 2). I have Symantec antivirus which works really good and you buy the cd and constantly get online updates to keep it up to date. Hope I was helpful. Good luck!

If you already have a security suite on your computer make sure it's activated and keep it updated, you can not run two anti virus programs at the same time they conflict with each other. Good Luck!
