Some of the foregoing answers do have merit, but none of them are entirely "there." So, let me give you a single, complete, real answer.

First, get a good education. A college degree will give you many options over the years, that a non-degreed person will not have.

Then cut up your credit cards. That's a euphemism which means to STOP the spend-spend-spend mentality that most people your age (and others) have. Learn to live beneath your means.

When you get a job, your employer will probably not offer a defined benefit pension plan. So you will need to fund your 401(k) or (403(b) sufficiently to get the maximum employer contribution.

Then you need to look at your Roth IRA. Fully fund it every year, for the rest of your life. Your contributions are not tax deductible, but all the earnings are tax-FREE!

Then give some thought to where you live. Owning your home is FAR more rewarding than renting, both psychologically and financially.

And people who are happily married tend to do better than singles or divorcees. So try to find a spouse that you will be happy with for a LONG time.

If you do these things, you will be a millionaire by the time you retire. And maybe long before that.

Rich in what?? But in answer to your dilemna, it is presumed that you are talking about money. Lots of choices. #3. Be a crook #2. Be a leader of a religous group. #1. Be a combination of both. In short, be a politician.

Invest from a young age... get a job as soon as possible and open a savings account. Put 10% of your income into the savings account, and when you have enough, move it to other investments such as mutual funds. Buy used and cheap, don't spend on frivolous BS that you don't need, such as expensive clothes, cars, etc.

Be tenacious. Be creative. Be your own boss. The richest men in the country own their own business. The richest companies meet the needs of the baby boomers, invent new technology or create cheaper ways of doing things or making things. Go for it! Do something great! You will bless mankind and get wealth in return!

It helps if you are rich when you are a kid.

Lie, cheat, steal, all those unethical things.

Or take over a small third world country, and force the US to bribe you for your support.

The best thing I know to do is remember to scrape and save, invest and 401k. It sucks to not spend but it pays off... ever notice how people with money tip horribly?
