Wow... I'm going to tell you my story about "Wicked;" it's late, I should be in bed, but I've had a couple drinks... So... I was in NYC seeing RENT and was buying something at the concessions and the girl selling it to me was talking about how she worked as a stage hand for Wicked and she had gotten a bootleg copy of the music... Anyways she said read the book...

Now, note here, I am a DIE HARD Wizard of Oz Maniac. I have been reading the series of books, collecting memerobilia, and seen the movie a bazillion times over the past 15 years. I can answer ANY question you could possible throw at me about Oz.

Anyways, I picked up the book and read it, and I really enjoyed. Didn't LOVE it, but enjoyed it... it was a darker side of Oz which I found fascinating... It was in the orginial spirit of L. Frank Baum (author of the original "Wizard of Oz") but did have a few inconsistencies from the series; but only a realy nutbag like me would notice. I immediately waited for the day the soundtrack came out and purchased it and fell in love... I was planning on going back to NY to see it but, become preggers, and was unable to fly by the time the show was on stage. Well, needless to say it's very difficult to go to NY from Arizona (where I live) with a newborn so I missed the show until about a month ago, when it came here, and I LOVED IT!!! It was sold out, and my husband surprised me and got me tickets... it was wonderful! I loved how they made everything dark, but put that classic broadway melody and twist to it. When you really look at the lyrics... it's not a very happy story, and you can see that... "No one Mourns the Wicked???" Damn right... it's all about how we villanize people who might not necessarily deserve it, but the are "different" so it's easier to label them as Wicked and hate them...Elphaba never actually did anything "Wicked" but because she was different, people didn't like it, so it was easy to deem her as Wicked and discard her. I love Galinda's "Floating Through Life," it totally fit her character in every aspect. I'm totally in love with Kristen Chenoweth who played the original Galinda, but the actress that played in the traveling company was just as awesome. "Popular" has got to be one of the best songs ever! (If you like it, you would probably like "My New Philosophy" from, "A You're A Good Man Charlie Brown." It's Super Fun!)

There's a lot of good moral tidbits in "Wicked" along with a Fantastic All-Time Best Musical Score, awesome characters shown in a new light.... LOVE IT!

I have read the book and seen the show. The book is WAY better than the show. I mean, it's a musical; so it's fluffy and pointless. The book provides a much deeper insight to the Land of Oz and how it works as well as reveals much about how our society.

The second book, "Son of a Witch," is definetely a must-read if you even "kind of" enjoyed "Wicked."

I liked it a lot. I also liked the book a lot. When I heard they were making a musical out the book, I didn't see how they could do it (it didn't seem to be musical material LOL). The adaptation is just wonderful - the music is quite good - and the original cast on Broadway were KNOCKOUTS. And it was gorgeous.

I recommend it to everybody. Though I can't say it was my favorite musical of recent years (I guess "Light in the Piazza" or "Grey Gardens" has that distinction) - but it was certainly in my top 10!

i've never read the book or seen the musical, but i do listen to the songs, and it's a great musical. I wont say it's the best (it comes behind things like Phantom of the Opera and Littleshop of horrors)

BEST PLAY IN THE HISTORY OF TIME

The book was good, obviously. But I have been to about every good play and musical out there. The music and singing is phenominal, my wife and I both have memorized the CD. The acting and playwrite is killer, and is a great continuation of an old classic.

I am glad someone finally mentioned this... why wasnt it me?

GOOD POINT

If you are going to see it, read the book first. They are very different but still the same,. The music is so uplifting and the costumes and backgrounds are to die for! It is an AWESOME story and an even better musical. Great. Stuff.

I read the book first, then saw the show. The book was good, but dark. The show varied a lot from the book but it was absolutely amazing so I didn't care. The music is incredible and the girl who played the lead (Shoshana Bean, please forgive the spelling) was so wonderful. It truly blew me away!

I read it and I liked that it showed the politics of Oz and that it gave an alternate view on an American Classic
