Alright. I have stumbled upon an obstacle in my ninth grade Honors Freshman English class. 75% of all the students who type an essay get "middle range grades," which my teacher classifies as C to B-. A high grade for her is a B to an A. She has taught about 1500 students in her life and has never given out an A+ on an essay. The only two students to get A's (out of 130) on the essay were my friends, a boy who received an A- and wants to major in literature (journalism), and a girl who takes more time to check her work than to actually type it. I know for a fact these two kids spent about 12 hours each on the essay. She has already given out "quizzes" with AP and ACT level questions. I got a low B on the essay. How can I get an A- or better on essays without trying so hard that it kills me (I don't want to major in English; Biology and Math is for me). Thanks

TRUST ME. I KNOW.

The teacher is not likely to say anything, even at her best efforts to help you, that will really get you an A, so don't rely on your teacher's words. Most likely they will be bluffs, and sadly being a fact of life, a teacher cannot really elicit a considered A-grade paper from you simply by talking.

If you are a leader-type, you can do something about it. Telling any complaints or accusations to any of the staff about how you don't like the teacher will not be of any help. They will only listen to you at rational thoughts and proposals of what you think must be DONE for the sake of educational improvement.

Carefully analyze and try to get it out from your teacher what her "standards" are. Is it comprehension? Critical thinking? Details of comparison? Of connection? Knowledge about the topic? Format? Whatever. Consider what makes an essay good to her standards. After finding that out (trust me, every teacher has a prioritized standard, and it is your job to find out), you will have an advantage of those unfortunate fellows who do not have any idea of the teacher's expectations.

And if you are sure they are AP or ACT level questions, you MUST do something about it. It is for your and the entire class' benfits. Ask her to lower the difficulty of the essays, and complain to her that it is unfair and unreasonable for a freshman to deal with such high level questions. If your teacher does not succumb to your pleading, talk to the English Department chair, or if it doesn't work (or if that person is your teacher), talk to the person in charge of education in your school. Remember that your objective is to lower the standards. If that person refuses to listen, consider the reason. If you TRULY think the reason of not listening to you is irrational, talk to the head of the school and complain about the teachers' refusals to listen to students' solicitations. If the head thinks you are the problem, well... nothing else can be done, is there?

Anyways, good luck with everything.

your teacher is a perfectionist. Talk to her about what she expects to see on an A+ paper. Work really hard on it. When you get your paper back graded, if you don't have a grade you want, ask her about why you were graded what you were.
