every song is a tear jerker, besides Joni Mitchell or Suzanne Vega, are there any female singers, who are in the same ballpark as these angels?

Have you heard of Girlyman? They are now on Amy Ray's label, Daemon. They are actually a trio of 2 women and a man, but they are AWESOME.
Ty and Doris of Girlyman used to be a duo called Garden Verge and they have a great album too.

I LOVE the Indigo Girls. I remember listening to them on my cassette player in my first car (yeah, before CD's LOL). I think there are other female singers who are just as good, but their music doesn't rival the depth of the Indigo Girls. I think Whitney Houston has an amazing voice, but her music lacks the layers of harmony and endearment that others do.

Melissa Etheridge! I've seen her a couple of times including this past tour after her bout with breast cancer...she was as good as ever! Her lyrics are awesome and inspiring...I am a huge Joni Mitchell fan but as far as gut wrenching lyrics and delivery, you cannot top Melissa! She is in a class all her own.
