It has been shown via studies that students do not perform as well in school when they are hungry. Nutrition is especially important in the formitive years as it impacts many things, both physical and mental and far too many students skip breakfast, harming their development and limiting their absorbtion of information.
Why can we not provide breakfast, free of charge, to all students in kinderarden through eighth grade?

Piggy I disagree. The school is responsible for making sure learning takes place. It has been proven via studies that learning takes place at a much lower rate when students are hungry. Hence, the school should share the burden with the parents to ensure that students are starting the day off with a full stomach.

regerugged I am sorry you feel that way. These are the children we are talking about, and although I hate most taxes, I wouldn't mind my taxes going up to help eliminate child hunger.

I teach in the inner city and we do provide all students with breakfast. It started as a grant but has since lapsed. We still provide it but i don't know yet who is paying for it. To those who say parents should feed their kids, you are absolutely correct. However, too many parents don't and many children I see don't have food in the house to eat at times. This year, a new program was instituted (by a volunteer group) for specifically identified children that provides the children with a weekend worth of food every Friday. The younger kids are glad to get it, but the older kids are embarrassed. One eighth grade boy told me today he didn't need the food 'cause his mom just went to the store yesterday and bought so much food they had to leave some of it in the living room. But he went and got his package "just so he wouldn't seem ungrateful." To be honest, the real issue is that children are hungry and if their parents don't care enough to feed them, we, as responsible adults, need to take care of the children.

Most of the students from my school get free breakfast because of the program we have in Florida. Free or Reduced breakfast/lunch if your family is qualified. If you make too much money, then you probably only get reduced meal.
I don't think school should be responsible if the child eats breakfast or not. Parents should make sure that their kids eat breakfast before they go to school .

Nothing is free. Someone would have to pay for your largess.
Children should eat breakfast at home, before going to school. It is the parents' responsibility to see that the children eat, and it is the parents' responsibility to buy the groceries.
I am not willing to pay taxes so someone else can have free food.

You are right... everyone should recieve breakfast. Specially kids. It's something that concerns the whole future and capabilities they may develope dependig on nutrition.
Anyways I suffer more with kids in my country, hunger and starvation in school-age kids is too much. Everyone has the right (i think) to be fed in first years... at least untill they are teenagers.

My childrens school does offer breakfast. Depending on income, you can get it free of charge, or reduced at .35 cents a day or full price at $1.50. I think its a good deal.

That's a VERY good question. It's not fair that we starve. I should start a petition.
