that so called "hillbilly" communities, or those who have lived unassimilated from new cultures are no more and forced to integrate to survive?

I dont think that highways have forced anything upon the "hillbilly" community. America is still large enough that if someone wanted to live undisturbed, than they can do that. If anything has forced this decimation, it is living in a capitalistic driven country. This forces the need for competion and wealth, which is difficult to do when one lives alone.

It would be too easy to blame the interstate highway system of the death of small communitys. The highway system is meant to move people from city to city as quickly as possible. Forceing people to slow down and pass thru every community would not help rural communities. If there were something to go there for people would take the turnoffs and go there.
