Very good exercise - a lot of worthwhile information to be found. If I were a History teacher, I think I'd steal the idea.

Absolutely. The song has a very large number of Historic Moments and by making History into a fun project of going through a good song it gets more of the students interested in doing the work. Why does a History class always have to be simply about boring lectures. Let the students do something that they might see as fun. And on top of it, by going over the song over and over, the students will begin to memorize the song itself, making them aware of the events and approximately when they took place.

I actually like that song. Probably one of Billy Joel's 3 or 4 best.
And yes, I think that's a wonderful way, since it pretty much just mentions a lot of historical events over the last 50 or 60 years.

My history teacher did the same thing and I don't see what's wrong with it. Makes sense to me actually to take something contemporary and have students investigate what the singer is talking about. Better than mindlessly singing along.

I don't think that I have heard that song before; therefore, if it wasn't offensive, ie: using offensive language, being deroggetory to anyone.....I wouldn't see why that wouldn't be a good way to get kids invovled in finding out about history. In fact, that is a very creative way.
