As your body begins to mature, the hormone levels increase. This increases production of oils in the glands in your skin. These sometimes get clogged, causing an infection, which is acne. The skin has so many microorganisms (bacteria) on it normally, but when these oil glands begin to secrete their stuff, the bacteria thrive and grow. That is why it is so important to keep your skin very clean. Some people will still have problems with acne, no matter what they do, but keeping your skin very clean is an important step you can take to prevent all the zits. Use a good commercial cleanser at least twice or three times a day. If that doesn't work, ask your doctor. Stronger cleansers can be prescribed, as well as other drugs that can help keep your face clearer.

Most every answer you will get will say hormones. That is generally a very small part of the equation. Anxiety and stress that comes with the hormones are the real causes. You sweat the small things and get anxious over boys/girls homework/dance. You just get sweaty and that brings out the spots. Dirt is washed into the hair folicle hole and that is it for you. Just the dirt in the air and a little sweat and there you have it. Wash often with product and don't let the little things upset you. You rule.

The exact cause of acne is unknown, but doctors believe it results from several related factors. One important factor is rising hormone levels. These hormones, called androgens (male sex hormones), increase in both boys and girls during puberty and can cause the sebaceous glands to enlarge and make more sebum. Another factor is heredity or genetics. Researchers believe that the tendency to develop acne can be inherited from parents. For example, studies have shown that many school-age boys with acne have a family history of the disorder.
