Rugby union is the name of the game of rugby, there is also another form of the game of rugby called rugby league. Rugby union was the original form of the sport with rugby league developing at a later time as an off-shoot of the original game. The game originated in the United Kingdom and both forms are now played worldwide with rugby union being the more popular form of the sport. The closest thing in American sports is American Football, though it is very different indeed.

Rugby Union has 15 players, Rugby league 13. Rugby League was historically working class and the Professional rugby on TV. Rugby Union was middle class and semi-pro. It is now professional at its upper ranks. League was played everywhere. New Zealand, South Africa, Fiji. Union has a larger pitch, is slower. I love Union only because my home team, when I lived in England, Moseley, was Union, which is odd, as Moseley is in working class Birmingham. And I played those rules when working for Cadbury's. And that helped me, as I'm not a speed demon, by any means. . Now I hear League is really struggling financially. Regardless, rugby, by any name, is a great sport to play, to watch, to follow. Long may it thrive, in whatever guise!!!!
