Could be a traffic light, It's 'red' (read) when it's viewed from the green side, and cannot be read when viewed from the back (black) side.

whoa you got me stumped there, i would say traffic light because one side is red while the other is green. But when is just black? When it's not working it flashes a red light hmmmm.....
