I used to live in New York state, now I live in North Caroilna. When I lived in Buffalo, NY, and people asked were I lived in a chat room or something I would just say New York. And they would always ask something like "OH DID YOU SEE THE TRADE CENTERS FALL DOWN?" or they would ask what it's like living in such a big city. It used to get annoying.

New York State doesn't get any media attention at all, hardly ever. It's always New York City. When was the last time CNN or FOX news said anything about Buffalo New York (the 2nd largest city in the state) or Albany New York (the capital)?

I guess that I've been lucky and nobody has ever mistaken my city for my province! Although, sometimes they have no idea where it is, let alone that it is in Canada! I can't see how that could really bother you, but if it does, you should blame the people who decided to name a city the same as the state it's in! I wouldn't fault anyone for the misunderstanding, especially because most people do say the town or city they are from and not the state (or province). To avoid confusion, you should just say the name of the city you are referring to instead of the state and most people would know what state it is in.

Hope this helps! ;-)

Doesn't bother me, having been born in Buffalo and lived in Buffalo, Long Island, and New York City. I just say I'm from New York and don't bother to clarify unless somebody really asks. Have you ever noticed just how many people in the world have some connection to Ithaca? It's amazing.

YES. I live in a really small town a little south of Buffalo, about as different from NYC as anything can possibly be, and I've run into this problem a lot. I remember my pen pal in fourth grade asked me what it was like to live in a huge city.

When people ask where I live, I tell them what city I live in. I would think that is what most people would do. I also don't watch the news to see if my city gets mentioned. But maybe it's just me.

I lived in the Hudson Valley for a long time; now I'm in Plattsburgh. I know exactly what you mean.
