Almost every jursidiction makes automatic knives unlawful, unless you are Law Enforcement.
The laws were written before the advent of the one handed opening folding knife with the stud on the blade that helps you open the knife.
The law considered that anyone who wanted to open a knife quickly and with only one hand wanted to use that knife as a weapon of offense, i. e. to assault/rob someone. With modern folding knives, quick one-handed operation is easy, and everyone likes it. It makes opening a knife to open a package easy, for instance, when you have the package in your hand. The laws haven't caught up to the fact that modern knives make switchblades obsolete.

Check with your state, I know in Ca. they are. As for why, its a matter of police safety. Its a hard to spot weapon with quick and easy deployment.
