I don't understand what is going on with the choice of Fernandes. All the articles I've been reading just keep saying that Deaf students and faculty want the search for a new president reopened and that they want someone with more commitment to diversity. Who is Fernandes? Is she deaf? Is she opposed to diversity? What's going on?? I'm hearing but I am learning ASL in college now and this is very exciting stuff! I wish the news would give a little background! PLEASE HELP :-)

Jane.K. Fernandez is currently the provost of Gallaudet University. She is set to take over the presidency of the university in 2007 when President King retires. While she is deaf, she was "mainstreamed" in school so she was not exposed to the deaf community until in her 20's. The students feel she is not representative of their community and therefore not qualified for being president of Galladuet. There are also accusations she is not fluent in sign language. Some students feel she is representative of those who are supportive of "audism" - in favor of those who speak and hear vs those who use sign language. Another complaint about the presidency search process is the candidates for the presidency were not diverse- specifically- none of the strong candidates were African American.

Hope that helps.

administration complications! the pupil protests were, in my opinion, *quite* justified. For goodness sakes, each and every of the scholars needed develop right into a deaf president for the college - that should not be too a lot to ask.
