The Freedom of Information Act 2000 applies to public authorities. Schedule 1, Part IV indicates that public authorities include:-
the governing body of a maintained school, within the meaning of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998. [clause 52]
and also:
the governing body of an institution within the further education sector [clause 53(a)].
A sixth form college (being post 16 education) probably falls within the further education sector. Either way the governors are obliged to provide the information.

Schools and colleges are neither public bodies or government agencies, and therefore probably does not fall into the freedom of information act, but where information is not available under the freedom of information act, such as personnel records from your employer, you are entitled to the information under the data protection act. Your student record is more likely to be covered by this legislation.
