Although Duchess is the female equivalent of Duke, they are not the same in terms of rank.
Someone who holds the title of Duke, which is the highest rank of peerage, usually holds the title in their own right. The title is usually only inherited through the male line and should a duke have daughters, the title will not pass on to them. An example of this would be the present Duke of York. He only has daughters and upon his death, the title will not be inherited by his eldest daughter but instead will revert back to the Crown.
Whereas a Duchess is usually the wife of a duke, and she gets her title via marriage. Should the marriage end, she loses the dignity that goes along with the title. An example of this would again, be with the present Duke of York. His wife, upon marriage became HRH The Duchess of York. Upon her divorce she is known as Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York. However, she is not a Duchess in her own right.
