I am having my scan in 5 days and I will be 21 weeks. The doctor told me they like to wait because they don't only look for the sex but they check the baby's heart valve too and I know how exciting it is to wait but you want to make sure the baby is healthy.

They can tell at 16 weeks .. I know because my Dr told me when I was 16 weeks. This was then confirmed at the 20 week scan and also the 32 week scan.
Remember though .. it all depends on the position of the baby during the scan and the skill of the person doing the ultrasound

Well i think that the doctor knows if its possible to tell or not so he wouldnt schedule an unessecary ultrasound just to have to do another one 3 weeks later at 20 weeks..... I am 15 weeks and my doctor scheduled an ultrasound for 17 weeks, i asked the nurse will they be able to tell what it is at this ultrasound and she said that the lady doing it is very experienced..With my other two it was done at 20 weeks and no suprises..

20 weeks to be sure. If they tell you anything before that sometimes it can be wrong. They told me when I was 14 weeks I was having a boy. At 22 weeks it was still a boy but sometimes they can't see everything right away.
