Flushing is the presence of extra blood near the skin's surface. During strenuous activity, your capillaries(small blood vessels near the skin) Open up to allow heat to transfer from your body. Blood enters the capillaries and passes heat to the skin, where it is relieved through sweating. It is important because without the heat transfer, you will overheat and suffer heatstroke, causing you internal organs to shut down.

I think it has something to do with increased curculation during strenuous activity. The blood pumps at a faster rate, which could cause you to look flushed, because the blood shows more in your skin. It would be important because it would increase your curculation and improve your cardiovascular endurance.

As your body overheats, it sends more blood near the surface of the skin, where sweat helps dissipate the excess heat. It's simply the way your body cools itself.
