It is absolutely NOT a myth. Some, but not all, cats carry toxioplasmosis and it is passed in their fecal matter. You can have your cat tested to see if they are a carrier but if they are an outdoor/indoor cat, they can get it at any time from eating birds, bugs, feces, etc. This can be very harmful to a fetus. The most critical time is during the first trimester which is up to week 13. This is when the most crucial development is going on. However, it is still not a good idea for any pregnant women to change the litter at all during her pregnancy even after the first trimester as, if contracted, this disease can still harm the baby. If transmitted in the first trimester, it can result in miscarriage and malformations. Don't Chance It!!

I actually read this in a magazine. If you have been around your cat for a few months before getting pregnant, then chances are you already got toxoplasmosis. So now your body is immune to it. The only time a pregnant woman is to be very careful is if she gets a cat AFTER becoming pregnant. I was worried about the same thing cause i have a cat for 6 years and am now pregnant. So my chances are slim to NONE...

No it is true. Cat feces can cause toxoplasmosis, which can be very detrimantal to baby. It can cause birth defects among other things. Have your spouse do it, you get a break for 9 months, and if your on your own have a friend do it, or wear gloves and a mask and be very carful. Good lucl

It's certainly a good idea to limit contact with bacteria and cat poo is filled with bacteria.
Best stay away for the whole pregnancy.
Though, women used to tread through the barn lot and milk the cows while pregnant.

Like everyone else has said it is true, but frankly I've changed litter boxes wth all three of my pregnancies, I'm not saying that you should, but if you decide to, wear gloves and cover your mouth and nose, and of course wash your hands afterwards.
