Let's say I have this equation:
-2x^3 + 3x^2*((3x^2)^1/2)-5 = 0

How do I solve this using the TI-84 calculator?
If not can you show me how to do this without using the calculator?

You enter that (-2x^3 + 3x^2*((3x^2)^1/2)-5) into the Equation Solver (MATH > 0. Solver)..
Then press ALPHA+SOLVE and you'll see that
x=-.9312713733... and 1.1586947142...

FYI, you'll need two different guesses to get both answers, try -1 and 1 and you'll see both answers...

First, note that (3x^2)^1/2 is the square root of 3x^2, and equal to (sqrt 3) * x.

Therefore, 3x^2*((3x^2)^1/2) is the same as 3 x^2 (sqrt 3) x, which simplifies to (3 sqrt 3) x^3.

Your equation becomes
-2 x^3 + (3 sqrt 3) x^3 - 5 = 0

Add like terms and move the 5 to the other side:
(3 sqrt 3 - 2) x^3 = 5

Divide:
x^3 = 5 / (3 sqrt 3 - 2)

You can now take the third power root,
x = {5 / (3 sqrt 3 - 2)}^(1/3)

or approximately 1.1609.

Multiply each and every thing by using x... that provides you with a quadratic -9x + x^2 = -18 x^2 - 9x + 18 = 0 (x - 6)(x - 3) = 0 x - 6 = 0 or x -3 = 0 x = 6 or x = 3 examine: -9 + 3 = -18/3? yep -9 + 6 = -18 / 6? yep

Sorry I cant show you how to do it on the calculator.
However, I can solve it over here.

-2x^3 + 3x^2*((3x^2)^1/2)-5 = 0
-2x^3 + 3x^2*Sqrt(3)x = 5
x^3(3sqrt3 - 2) = 5
x^3 = 5 / (3sqrt3 - 2)
x^3 = 5 / 3.1962
x^3 = 1.564
x = 1.161

-2x^3 + 3x^2*((3x^2)^1/2) = 5
-2x^3 + 3^1.5x^3 = 5
x^3 (3xsqrt(3) - 2) = 5
x^3 = 5/(3 x sqrt(3) - 2)
x = (5/(3 x sqrt(3) - 2))^1/3

I don't have a calculator with me...

you can insert the left side of that equation into y1=
then put y2=0 for the second equation
Then look on the graph for the intersection points and find those points by using the Intersect function on the calculator

-2x^3 + 3x^2(3x^2)^(1/2) - 5 = 0
x^3(3sqrt(3)-2) = 5
x = (5/(3sqrt(3)-2))^(1/3)
keystrokes:
3, √x, *, 3, - 2, =, /, 5, 1/x, x^y, (, 1, /, 3, ), =

(dunno if the TI-84 has INV and x^3 keys, pretty sure it will have a √x key)
