I just started giving my 4-week-old baby tub baths (in her baby tub) and she urinates in the tub each time! I've resorted back to giving her sponge baths because I'm not sure what to do. Any suggestions??

Most adults would pee once their rear hits a nice warm tub of water. The only thing that stops them is they know it's not something you'd want to sit in. As for a baby, it's nothing to worry about. After all, urine is sterile.

First, don't worry about your child urinating in the bath tub. It may seem "icky" to you, but infant's urine is very clean. It is only a waste product of breastmilk or formula and has gone through a great natural filtration process in the kidneys. It doesn't nullify the bath.

Second, make sure you're giving her a luke warm (not cold and not hot) bath in a warm area free from drafts. The change in temperature probably stimulates her to urinate.

Third, if you are really just uncomfortable with continuing her bath if she's urinated in it, start her bath off with soapy bubbles in the tub/sink that you are bathing her in. That way, if she does urinate, she's peeing in clean, soapy water.

The pH of urine is fairly similar to that of tap water, and will not harm your baby. To read more on the composition of human urine (if you're still worried), see the link below.

I'm guessing that you are a first-time mom. Relax - it gets a lot easier in the coming weeks and months. Good luck!

Try having her close when you run the water and prepare the bath (running water might trigger urination). Then undress her and keep her out of the tub for the first minute or so, with her diaper undone but still under her. The cold air might make her urinate before she gets in her tub. Let me tell you though...they don't stop!

completely natural. The water relaxes the baby. Eventually urinating wont be the only thing going on. My son pooped in the tub most of the time until he was almost a year old.

This is completely normal and will continue to happen. Your baby can not control their bladder functions at this age. If your baby urinates in the bath water, just change the water and start over. There is no way to make your baby stop doing this. My son is 2 and it still happens occasionally.

It is totally normal and she is going to be doing that for quite sometime and eventually she is going to poop in the tub as well.

Babies can not control thier bladder or bowl movements which is one reason they wear diapers.

As she gets to be a about a year old she will pee in the tub less and less but it will still happen now and then.

Ah...yes this has happened to me many times as I was babysitting. So here's something you can try. You can try getting baby ready for her bath, but keeping a diaper on, and dip her feet and legs into the water but don't get the diaper wet or else it'll swell up. Usually when I do this baby will do her business into her diaper, and I can then take off the diaper and then yay! No more yellow bathwater.

The baby is only 4 weeks old! Give it a rest! Pee is sterile anyway. She is probably peeing as a natural reaction to the temperature change with the warm water. It is a passing phase.

It's normal for the sensation of the water to make a baby pee, just like the shock of cold air can when you open their diaper. Try getting her wet first, letting her pee, then doing the bath, or just doing it right after she has gone to the bathroom.
