By making it as user friendly as possible ....
Appeal to the least common denominator ... that means that you make it usable for people even without the latest technology.
Good colour coordination and pleasing esthetics
Content, content, content.

Well there are many technical things you can improve, but as far as style and layout, it's really subjective, personal taste. Try doing similar styles to some of your own personal favorite websites.
