From the outside of the battery? Wear safety goggles, and clothing that won't melt, i.e. denim. No nylon or plastic materials. Get an old toothbrush and some baking soda. Pour the powder on the battery, and put a little water on it to activate it. Use the toothbrush to gentle scrub away the acid. Rinse well with fresh water. Throw the toothbrush away immediately.

Use bicarbonate of soda. This is what any lead acid battery manufacturer will tell you. Some batteries, such as nickel cadmium, are basic, so in that case, use lemon juice or some other mildly acid solution.

why in the world would you want to do something like that? It's not an easy process, as a battery is not really meant for someone to just try and pry it apart.

get you a bottle of coco cola, classic coke, and that will eat that acid right off there, if not coke, use baking soda and water, then rinse with hot water, if not that plain water but lots and lots of it, but coke will work the best, poor coke on it let sit for like five minutes rinse off with water, make sure coke is fresh, not some flat coke it gotta be nice and fresh....

neutralize it with baking soda first. Then, if you're looking to clean the terminals, any autostore carries a product that will clean them up.
