it was based VERY LOOSLY on Ed Gein, a man from Wisconson who dug up dead bodys and wore the skin. He was never proven to have killed anyone. He is thaught to have paid people to kill for him (only twice) and he never used a chainsaw. the original producer added in the chainsaw as hi own idea. So There was NEVER a "chainsaw massacre". look it up.

Very loosely based. The real mans name is Ed Gein, and he was also the inspiration behind Norman Bates in Psycho, and Buffalo Bill in the movie Silence of the Lambs. Here is a great link if you want to read about him.

The ED GEIN answer is correct..when they tracked Mr Gein to his farm, he had a freshly butchered lady hanging in his barn like a field dressed deer, he had various momentos of visits to the graveyard where he had plundered graves and collected pieces of women's bodies. He collected dead women's pubic areas and breasts, and human skin. The "Silence of the Lambs" book and movie has elements of ED Gein also.

hell no!!! My boyfriend and i looked it up cuz he wanted to see the movie, but only if it was true and we found out that the guy that leatherface was based on was nothing like him. the only similarity was that they both wore human skin-masks... the real guy used a pistol, never a chainsaw, and had never even been to texas. we were EXTREMELY dissapointed.

yes it was based on a true story of some guy in texas and he even went as far as to dig up some fresh women's graves and dress up in their skin. It almost makes you want to throw up to think about it.

In broad strokes it is about serial killer Ed Gein but that was in another state. And No, he is not at large.
