HTTP stands for 'HyperText Transfer Protocol' and it's the protocol used for accessing web pages (which generally start with WWW standing for 'World Wide Web'. 'Protocol' is a standard way of communicating across a network. A protocol is the "language" of the network. It tells the receiving computer how to send its messages back.
If you type a URL just as www.something.com, the browser assumes that you want to use HTTP and it will automatically add http:// (notice the colon and two slashes which show what protocol to use). In modern browsers it doesn't matter whether you type it or not because it's the default protocol.
Another common protocol, which is used for transferring files from one computer to another via the Internet, is ftp - File Transfer Protocol. You do have to type in the protocol part in order to access an FTP server ... for example ftp://www.microsoft.com (I'm fairly certain that that link does nothing, by the way!)

If you want my site you typ http://www.mike10613.talktalk.net . now if this is HTML Hypertext mark Up Language it should change the colour of that and underline it so you know it's a link. but in your browser - you only usually need type the www part the browser adds the http:// automatically - some sites don't need www (word wide web). Click the links that are a different colour and underlined and you should be taken to my website - look around and enjoy! lol The music is good!

Actually, they can be used together, or just http.
http means "hyper text transfer protocol". As the name says, it is used to link to websites. This is what takes you to a website. You can see it as the phrase "take me to" followed by the URL (address) of the site. You may also come across https. It means that the site is secured. I would advise you not to give personal information such as your credit card number unless you see the site is secured.
www- world wide web - is used to access websites. A lot of websites have subdomains, which means they do not use the www.

Use this as an example: http//www.yourname.com
The first line of the browser's request, HTTP://, indicates that the browser wants to see the home page of the site, and that the browser is using the HTTP protocol.
The second line, WWW.YOURNAME.COM, indicates what part of the Internet is being used and the web site that the browser is asking for. This is required because many web sites may share the same IP address on the Internet and be hosted by a single computer. The Host: line was added a few years after the original release of HTTP 1.0 in order to accommodate this.
There are many parts to the Internet - WWW is but one of them.
You can type the second part (WWW.YOURNAME.COM) for the more established sites, like www.yahoo.com, www.amazon.com, etc., and be connected to them directly.

http is a standard or protocol which specifies how computers or other devices communicate in a network . Essentially internet is just a bunch of computers connected in a nework.
The World Wide Web ("WWW" or simply the "Web") is a global, read-write information space. Text documents, images, multimedia and many other items of information, referred to as resources, are identified by short, unique, global identifiers called Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs) so that each can be found, accessed and cross referenced in the simplest possible way.

everything, www is the inital start name for a web address( in the future you might get moon.yahhoo.co.outerspace)
the other is the instructions of how the computer shoudl send the details of the web site to your computer(basic).
someties www is missing because there is nothing else at the moment and it is assumed to be at the start of the web address(URL)
