First of all, the state is supposed to pay for the attorney if the arrested individual cannot.
Second of all, once you're in jail...you have FAR FEWER rights than you once had.
Oh, if you want me to get political i will.
Yes, thanks to the badly-named Patriot Act we could be detained for any amount of time without a speedy trial or right to a lawyer. It's sickening to think of the bounds that the Bush Administration will go to so they can further their imperialist agenda.

The Patriot Act is a huge thousand page Document. Many of those who approved it the first time around, ADMITTED THEY HADN'T even read the thing! The second time around, the drafters of the document made a few changes (REGARDING A FEW CONTROVERSIAL ISSUES) and then submitted it for approval knowing it would be approved no matter what because those charged with reading the thing, WOULDN'T read beyond the changes. Members of the Congress and Senators should consider having these new laws, legislation, etc. automatically placed on tape so they can at least LISTEN to them when they are at home or on a plane, or driving. They are SUPPOSEDLY working during the day and sometimes into the evening hours.
Few have time - or inclination - to read weighty thousand page documents

The so-called "Patriot Act" -- proposed by Bush and passed by the republican-majority house and senate (and recently renewed with only a few minor changes) allows the government to detain anyone for any length of time for any reason with no requirement to abide by existing laws with regard to access to lawyers, right to a speedy trial, due process, legal search and seizure, etc.
Ostensibly this was done to allow the government to use extraordinay means to pursue, confine, and interrogate terrorists...but there is no requirement in the law that the suspects so detained be suspects in a terrorist act.
I should note this only applies to the federal government, though states and other jurisdictions have numerous times handed over prisonsers to the federal government without a warrant or any other justifiable reason...

The reality is we have so many rights in this country but we don't appreciate them.
We have the right to live where we want to, to travel freely to any part of the country. We have the right to vote or to choose not to.
We have the right to send our children to public or private school. We have the right to work in whatever field we want to if we work hard enough to qualify.
We have the right to obey the existing laws and voice our opinion on new laws to our representatives. We even have the right to become one of those representatives if we want to.
There are good & bad in all fields, including law enforcement.
Stay out of trouble, obey the law and work hard. If you do these things you can work on making your dreams come true.
Your dreams can come true in our country because of our rights, that's why everybody wants to come here.

David B.'s quote is an old one - and - actually he didn't even it get it right. The correct quote is "He who is a conservative at age 20 has no heart, and he who is a liberal at age 40 has no head." - and that quote was at a time when the Democratic & Republican parties were quite different. It should be: "He who votes Republican has no soul."
What the Constitution Party does is misinterpret the Constitution to somehow think that the U.S. should be a theocracy. If you think our government should be a Christian government (not at all when the founders of our country wanted - they understood the important of separation of church & state (in order to protect BOTH)) - then - yeah - vote Constitution Party.

There's a trend and we're all losing our rights. The less privileged are noticing it first, but sooner or later, we'll all be personally affected. Vote Republican to stay on this track!
