Then how do I keep my visa? I am a US citizen. I have a visa to work in Japan. I am currently living in the US.

The passport office should be able to put the appropriate pages into the new document. Just ask them when you bring it in.

They will return the old passport stamped void with the new one. You will have to contact the Japanese consulate about having the visa put into the new passport. Just bring both to them and I am sure they can handle it.

i would renew my passport and when they send me the new one (less the japanese visa) i would then send both the old an the new one to the japanese embassy requesting a new visa entered onto my newly issued passport. i suggest you do this via registered mail.
