Can the new Don/Umrao Jaan or Sholay really match up to the original ones made by thinking men years ago?

Remake of earlier pictures is routine in the filmworld. It may be that when we see the new versions (if we had seen the earlier) we automatially compare the two and find that while they may excel in some aspect the others do not measure up to the earlier classics. However, the new producer may bring to bear new ideas, new techniques of picturisation, music which may may raise the production to a higher plane. For example the Umrao Jan earlier made with Rekha presents the danceneue as a prostitute while the new producer claims that he has brought out Amir Jan in a different ,sophisticated light. Sholay made such a huge impact earlier because it was a monumental departure from the production till then.In the new production perhaps the presentation of the characters by the new team would be in a different light and let us hope better.Don made waves earlier for it was an Amitabh film when he was just blooming and the freshness he brought to the character was marvellous. Now neither the subject nor the actors are new but with a better knowledge and dev elopment of production technique it may come out as a unique experience. The Devdas has had four previous version each good in its own way but on account of the imperfect prouction techniques then prevailing none came out as impressive as the Bansali version which just missed being sent for the highest film honour. However, when we here of remakes there is natural to feel somewhat nervous about the effort how it would turn up with these new lads vis-a-vis the past masters.
