It sounds like he is a candidate for professional psychotherapy and needs to be using anti-depressant medication.
However, I would like to submit a possible reason for his depression and his feelings about attempting suicide. This advice is only a guess. So, take it with a grain of salt.
Sometimes, if a person articulates thoughts of suicide, his self esteem is too high and someone is threatening his view of himself.
People who have extremely high self esteem which is not justified in some concrete manner sometimes become unraveled if they realize that their self worth is not sustainable in real life situations.
Look back on his life for the last few years and attempt to determine if his self esteem seems too high and that it is being threatened.
This is only a thought about a complex situation which I have only a small bit of knowledge.
I hope this helps. Good luck.

This sounds like more than just depression. It sounds like he's getting help. Some counseling for the rest of the family wouldn't hurt and if he's physically hurting you he can be committed to a hospital. Good luck.

Your brother needs the care of a competent psychiatrist. Mental illness (in this case clinical depression) is a physhical illness, like diabetes, with symptoms that act on the brain chemistry. With proper medication and care your brother should be able to obtain an improved quality of life. For your support and that of others close to him I recommend NAMI (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill). They have family support groups that help families and other care givers deal with their mentally ill loved ones.

If your brother is that out of of control he needs to see a psychiatrist and get some help. He may need a perscription but he should have this perscribed for him by a doctor. If he has hurt you it needs to be reported either to parents or to the authorities. From there a good course of action can be decided upon. Someone though who is suffering from depression should not be ignored, they need help.

He's most likely hurting on the inside or has something from the past or present that is unresolved and needs to be taken care of. Make sure he knows you care about him, because he sounds like he could use the encouragement.
