So we don't multichannel from other peoples' dreams. No, seriously, sleep is relaxation of the body. All the members have to relax and suspend activity to a degree to replenish from activity during the day, otherwise you'd wear out in no time. Too, it facilitates image manifestation in the brain while you dream. The mind distracted in sleep makes it relax even more.

I'm certainly not a doctor, but I would imagine that when you fall asleep, your muscles relax and your eyelids close. It takes a conscious effort and use of your eye muscles to keep your eyelids open. How's that?

Because otherwise you'd have to blink to keep your eyes moist, and the muscles that control blinking are not automatic like those for breathing, or your heart.

Our muscles, when asleep, seek their lowest energy level, which is relaxed. Relaxed eyelids automatically close. Good question for a change.

Our eyes are lubricated when we blink... If we were sleeping, we likely wouldn't blink, and if our eyes were open, they would dry out pretty badly. The reason we sleep with our eyes closed is so that our eyes don't dry out.

We are technically not conscious, so we are vulerable to dust and crud falling in our eyes without us knowing. Ergo, we shut our eyes to keep the crud out.
